The Collective Background

Miles Kelsey - Image Management - Following his Part 1 Architecture degree Miles pursued a placement in Architecture, working for one year at Edgley Design, a small architecture practice in London. Here he began life as an architect’s assistant, helping with technical detailing and small design output processes. He then completed a Part 2 BA Degree at Kingston University in Architecture before entering a work placement as a graphic designer for design based practice in London. Miles worked here for a year before accepting an opportunity to work as an Architectural Designer for Bjarke Ingels Group in Denmark. His duties here included working with architects on presentation outputs and working on company branding and image management. At B.I.G Miles worked with Anna on a sustainable housing project, which gained a lot of publicity and grew in size after its initial proposal. They enlisted the help of Jenny and Scott to complete this project. After its success other design companies who wanted a similar design style and process applied to an array of other projects approached the group. With the help of Dan and Charles, The Design Collective was founded in 2020 to help fulfil these company’s needs.

Jenny Etheridge - Technological Management - On completion of a part one architectural degree at Nottingham Trent University, Jenny secured a placement at MB Structures in Manchester; the architectural course gave a vast insight into the world of everything architectural however it was the structural side Jenny wished to pursue. Gaining experience in steelwork, concrete structures and timber framing broadened materiality knowledge and an extended approach into structures was formed. Following a placement year Jenny secured a job as an assistant structural engineer and Romala Design in Manchester. The first year involved working within residential sectors of the structural industry. During Jenny’s second year at Romala and opportunity arose for her to complete a structural engineering course alongside working. In 2019 Jenny graduated as a structural engineer. Following her graduation Jenny was asked to help both Miles and Anna on a sustainable housing project with the Bjarke Ingels Group. The success the project brought helped kick start the creation of The Design Collective.

Daniel Hyde - Financial Management - After completing his BSc Honours Degree in Architectural Technology in 2014 he continued to study at the Nottingham Trent University to obtain a BSc Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying. After completion in 2016 Daniel moved back to Lincolnshire and worked at a local Architectural Practice Hodson Architects in Cleethorpes. Here he became a project architect and architectural design Manager.

After two years working at Hodson Architects and achieving a CIAT accreditation he decided to go back to university at NTU and pursue a two-year Degree in Accounting and Finance to allow him to gain the experience in finance and management that would allow him to run and build a company.

In 2020 Anna, Miles, Jenny and Scott enlisted Dan as financial manager to help form The Design Collective.

Anna Holmes - Market Management - After Anna graduated from her Part 1 Architecture degree at Nottingham Trent University she went to work at Cullinan Studio in London, as an architectural assistant, for 2 years. It was here that she became involved in highly sustainable projects, sparking her interest for sustainable urban housing design. Anna then completed her Part 2 Masters in Architecture at the London College of Art, where she started a two-year research project on energy efficient and low carbon technologies. Following her interest she landed a job in Denmark with the Bjarke Ingels Group. Working specifically on high-end sustainable design projects on a range of building types for 2 years. Anna worked with Miles at B.I.G on a sustainable housing project, which gained a lot of publicity and grew in size after its initial proposal. They enlisted the help of Jenny and Scott to complete this project. After its success other design companies who wanted a similar design style and process applied to an array of other projects approached the group. With the help of Dan and Charles, The Design Collective was founded in 2020 to help fulfil these company’s needs.

Scott Barnsley - Administration Management - After completion of his Part 1 in Architecture, Scott worked with the major house builders David Wilson. During this placement he helped bring forward a range of housing developments across the UK. After the placement Scott then completed his part 2 in Architecture at Bath University, and secured himself a position working for Redmak. The experienced gained was working within the house building industry dealing with strategic land issues. After greatening his experience in the housing industry Scott joined Anna, Miles and Jenny on a sustainable housing project for Bjarke Ingels Group. It was from here that The Design Collective began its formation.

Charles Saunders - Information Technology Management - After graduating from Nottingham Trent University Charles went and worked as an architectural assistant for a year at a local architectural practice, he then went straight back to university at Kent School of Architecture to complete a BA Part 2 before moving to London and working as an architectural assistant at Orms. Shortly after Charles was offered a job at IBM Ltd and took the opportunity to develop his computer and technical skills, he worked here for 1 ½ years and began planning the start of The Design Collective, with the chance to combine his computer and design skills within one company. In 2020 Charlie was approached by Miles and asked to help co-found The Design Collective.
